Akwesasne Freedom School (AFS)
History Founded in 1979, the Akwesasne Freedom School was established by Mohawk parents to bridge the gap in cultural and linguistic services within the public school system.
Impact As an independent nonprofit, AFS has dedicated over 45 years to revitalizing Mohawk culture, centered on the belief that preservation starts with our children.
- Total Immersion: In 1985, the school made the historic transition to a total Mohawk immersion curriculum.
- Community Led: The school continues to be administered by parents committed to ancestral sovereignty.
- Longevity: Decades of proven success in linguistic education and cultural survival.
National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC)
Mission The NIWRC is a Native-led nonprofit organization dedicated to ending violence against Native women, children, and communities.
Approach We provide national leadership to address violence within Tribal communities by amplifying grassroots voices and providing essential support through:
- Technical Assistance & Training: Equipping advocates with the tools they need.
- Policy Development: Creating systemic change at the national and tribal levels.
- Sovereignty-Focused Advocacy: Strengthening Tribal sovereignty to ensure the long-term safety of families.
- Resource Sharing: Distributing vital information to protect the most vulnerable.
